The Bon

Rating: NNN

On their debut 7-inch, Tijuana Bibles founders Craig Daniels and Peter Gleeson set aside Mexi-surf sounds in favour of straight-up retro garage punk. The lyrics to A-side Stupid Question are pretty silly, but solid production by John Critchley (ex-13 Engines) turns this Hivesesque tune into a great barroom brawl backer. The song’s best moment is an infectious, inventive guitar solo that briefly turns the main riff on its ear.

B-side Ancient Times, whose lyrics list mundane differences between past and present, features a memorable call-and-response chorus. Once again, a short but super-creative bridge outshines the rest of the otherwise simple song.

Top track: Stupid Question

The Bon release their 7-inch at Trash Palace September 19.
