THE BROTHERS CREEGGAN

Rating: NNN

Mellow and melancholy, the Brothers Creeggan’s latest offering of alt-folk soft rock rides pretty melodies and delicate textures with dreamy lyrics and odes to joy and sorrow. Andy Creeggan’s vocals on songs like A Vote For Beauty and Grey have that yearning, haunting Neil Young/Rufus Wainwright quality. The Barenaked Ladies’ Jim Creeggan is joined on vocals by Sarah Harmer and his bandmate Ed Robertson for the lilting, ethereal country piece Anna On The Moon. Crisp and lovely, Sleepyhead falls short because it’s just that, sleepy. The same slow tempo continues throughout the disc, picking up only rarely to a light bossa speed. It never really kicks off.
