After a few very successful years and halfway through recording their new album, Spiritualized main man Jason Pierce unceremoniously axed his long-time band last year, including bassist Sean Cook, drummer Damon Reece and guitarist Mike Mooney. Lupine Howl is the cast-offs' new unit and, not surprisingly, it sounds a lot like Spiritualized, or at least like the ideas they brought to that outfit. Unfortunately for the fired musicians, The Carnivorous Adventures Of Lupine Howl largely shows just how peripheral they were to the group's sound. With their bluesy gait and vague space rock ambitions, the nine tracks here come off like Spiritualized minus the grandeur -- which is the whole point of a Spiritualized album -- while the woe-is-me lyrics sound more whiny than hurt. The sonic equivalent of a chicken's body running around after its head's been cut off. Pierce's new album, meanwhile, is still being mixed.
