The cash Brothers A Brand New Night (Universal) Rating: NNN
Now that Blue Rodeo have gone all orchestral with their Stax-style horn section, someone's gotta hold down the roots rock fort in this town. The Cash Brothers are ready to step up with A Brand New Night, which exudes that comfortable downhome vibe of Blue Rodeo's lovely Five Days In July. The Cash Brothers also return to the spiky alt-rock of brother Andrew's mid-90s Ursula project and deftly fold those undertones into a rugged organic mix of tasteful instrumentation (the saloon piano accents are a particular highlight) and well-written twang-pop hooks. Occasionally, they come off like a generic bar rock band, but their trump card is their sweet, brotherly harmonies, which permeate the entire disc. Nice.
