Like most people, I was sure Sub Pop had given up trying to recreate the magic Stooges rock ‘n’ roll formula, but just when you thought they’d turned their focus toward sensitively strummed John Denver-style folk-pop, the Catheters come screaming back with guitars blazing. Howling… It Grows And Grows!!! isn’t a bold leap forward but, rather, a cautious step sideways. Now that they’ve found their groove, it’s a matter of maintaining their angular rhythms and aggressive bashing while slightly improving the quality of production. Still no whiny ballads, thankfully.
