THE DEARS

THE DEARS No Cities Left (MapleMusic) Rating: NN Rating: NNN

Nearly a year in the making, the Dears’ full-length follow-up to their 2000 debut, End Of A Hollywood Bedtime Story, is a stunning disappointment. The promising direction of their fab interim EPs, Orchestral Pop Noir Romantique and Protest, has been cast aside to pursue a course closer to Morrissey’s scattered post-Smiths dabbling. No Cities Left comes off like a haphazard collection of verses and choruses in search of a song. Lost In The Plot would’ve made a more fitting title track.

The Dears open for Matthew Good at Kool Haus tonight and tomorrow (Thursday and Friday, April 10-11).
