THE DECEMBER SOUND

Rating: NNN

This debut disc adds these psychedelic shoegazers to the ranks of cool American bands currently reviving fuzzed-out Brit-rock sounds that were mostly abandoned in the mid-90s.

Ethereal vocals and trembling guitars cut through massive washes of reverb-drenched static on opener Never and will certainly appeal to fans of fellow NYC outfits Psychic Ills and A Place to Bury Strangers. Sure, Tape Tape is just a punchier retread of My Bloody Valentine’s Only Shallow, but the December Sound take things in unexpected directions on their NME-approved, electro-tinged Kill Me (Before I Kill You).
