In desperate need of some direction and a boost of creativity, the Detroit Cobras have recalled song doctor to the ex-stars Greg Cartwright to work on Tied &True. Sure, he was able to help get Shangri-Las singer Mary Weiss back on track, but he ain't no miracle worker. He's got his own set of production/orchestration tricks ("Let's try it with timpani!") copped from favourite recordings of decades past - only, when applied to the Cobras, they only emphasize the throwback aspect of what they do rather than break them out of the retro ghetto they're stuck in. All they've got left is Rachel Nagy's voice, but her lethargic cracks at Bettye LaVette's You'll Never Change and Gino Washington's Puppet On A String do nothing to counter the Cobras' growing rep for being a half-assed cover band that can't get their shit together.
