THE DEVIN CUDDY BAND launch their album at the Cameron House on October 20. See listing. Rating: NNN
Piano man Devin Cuddy has been a regular performer at the Cameron House for a few years. On his debut album released by the venue's record label, he opts for a live-off-the-floor sound that closely emulates his live set.
Unlike many young Canadian roots performers, Cuddy draws inspiration from New Orleans blues and Dixieland jazz in addition to country music, so you can really groove and dance to the tunes. He's still finding his voice as a songwriter; varied influences percolate from song to song. On East Coast Bred, he sounds like Jack Marks, while elements of swing and rockabilly come through elsewhere.
Cuddy may sing a bit like his dad, Blue Rodeo's Jim Cuddy, but his music is his own. Volume One is a promising start.
