the diableros

Rating: NNNN

They originally formed to cover Jesus and Mary Chain tunes for a tribute show, so it’s not surprising that local upstarts the Diableros demonstrate a healthy appreciation for walls of jangly, fuzzy, shoegazey guitar noise on their fantastic debut. But the verbosely titled You Can’t Break The Strings In Our Olympic Hearts is more than just a mere act of homage it’s a dynamic set of elastic, smartly constructed pop that hinges on Pete Carmichael’s frazzled yelp and warm, rib-tickling wheezes of Farfisa organ. This is seriously addictive stuff — dreamily psychedelic album opener Working Out Words has the pastel Velvets vibe of the best Luna songs the awesome heavy fuzz bass of Tropical Pets provides a nice counterpoint to the track’s twinkly guitar-and-organ framework and driving, chiming melodies make Through The Foam the type of anthem I’d love to hear on the radio in an ideal world, one where mainstream radio didn’t suck.

The Diableros launch their disc Saturday (November 26) at Sneaky Dee’s.
