Any review of the Doers must by law include the Q-word, "quirky," and for damn good reason. In fact, it's immediately apparent that this is a group of wacky young kids having wholesome good times with their friends. The product is a slew of brief, jazzy, acoustic pop songs with more than your daily allowance of sugary melodies, nerdy, shouty girl-boy voices and oddball toss-off lyrics, in the vein of the Sugarcubes but without the malice. There are occasional catchy bits (No Right Now), but it would take a little more substance to redeem the 19-song Whatcha Doin'? This is the kind of music you find amusing and fun or really, really grating.
The Doers play the Boat on Friday (April 28).
