THE DONNAS

Rating: NNN

The Donnas are supposed to be all grown up since they turned 21, but they still sound 17. Their first major-label release is a relentlessly simplistic barrage of punk rock, mostly about boys and being bad-asses. Nothing here is going to win points for originality, but the band has tightened up over the years, and Spend The Night is fun, sexy and kind of a kick in the pants — at least until every tune starts to sound remarkably like the one before it. I have to wonder, though, if guys playing music of the same quality would get the same attention. The fact that Spin Magazine wrote that the Donnas “just might be the coolest band in America” says more about the dearth of all-girl bands than it does about this particular band. The Donnas play the Opera House Wednesday (November 6).
