On last year's much-hyped Blueberry Boat disc, the siblings Friedberger flaunted a self-conscious sense of whimsy that made me want to hit them with a big stick. Between the breathless ADD fragments of their arrangements and the cutesy absurdism of their lyrics, the album seemed like a hipster joke. Happily, they've found focus with this EP of new and unreleased material. Sure, the characters who narrate their hallucinatory vaudeville still have a surreal fairy-tale quality that makes them seem like they've tiptoed out of one of Sheila Heti's Middle Stories, and the disc dissolves into weird faux-operatic nonsense by the end. But the Faint-style electro-squelch of lead track Single Again and the vague Blondie undertones that permeate the EP's first few oddball suites suggest the Furnaces are more comfortable letting their gimmicky noodling gel into actual songs.
