The Fiery Furnaces have always done their own thing, but their bizarre song structures and oddball lyrics were taken to a new level with 05's Rehearsing My Choir. They toned things down a bit on their last disc, Bitter Tea, but their new effort sees them returning to their eccentric ways.
Right from the get-go, fans will either love or hate this disc. The first track is a seven-minute adventure filled with wacky piano riffs, shouts of indie rock distortion and long stretches of instrumentation. Widow City is at least intriguing, which can't be said for a lot of music out there. The Friedberger siblings aren't afraid to layer strange sounds over nonsensical lyrics and mix traditional arrangements with more complex time structures.
As usual, this record will leave many scratching their heads, but for fans who like their music a little more complicated, this is easily one of the more interesting records out there.
