THE FLAMING LIPS

THE FLAMING LIPS Fight Test EP (Warner) Rating: NNN

Rating: NNN

Since those high-profile shows with Beck and with a major label ready and willing to green-light Wayne Coyne’s every recording whim, it’s a very good time to be in the Flaming Lips. The whole point of the Fight Test EP seems to be to take the piss out of Kylie Minogue, Beck, the White Stripes and Radiohead while promoting the forthcoming Flaming Lips movie, Christmas On Mars, due in 2004. It turns out the concept of the Flaming Lips doing Can’t Get You Out Of My Head is more entertaining than actually hearing them groan through the annoying number. There’s more humour on tap here when they hilariously rework Beck’s The Golden Age into what sounds like a Scientology hymn before signing off with a good laugh at the expense of Jesus-loving Jack and Meg White. Well, it’s funny the first time through, at least.
