THE FREE PRESS Half Truths & Whole Lies (independent) Rating: NN
Maybe you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but can you judge a band by its MySpace influences? In short, yes. Toronto five-piece the Free Press claim Guster, U2, Dave Matthews and Indigo Girls as a few of the bands that have inspired them, so you can probably guess what these guys sound like.
Their debut disc is filled with bland, light pop tunes that probably wouldn't even make adult contemporary radio. As obnoxious as Matthews or Guster are, it would have served the band better to sound even more like them, as these tunes lack the passion - and more importantly, the mass-appeal choruses - that have made their influences famous.
With such middle-of-the-road fare, it's unlikely anyone, even dull Dave Matthews, will be asking these guys to open for them any time soon.
