The Get Up Kids

The Get Up Kids Guilt Show (Vagrant) Rating: NNN

Rating: NNN

The popular pop punks’ fourth record maintains the fast-tempo harmonics that have made them popular and adds momentary shifts in tone and mood, sometimes accomplished by keyboard flourishes. This probably indicates that the band underwent some kind of personal growth. Calling it pop punk is misleading, though, as it’s so clean-sounding that it’s more like straight pop rock. The vocals and guitars squeal, but there’s rarely a heavy bottom end, and sometimes I swear to god it sounds like mid-period Treble Charger mixed with Weezer. Far from my thing, but enough effort was put into this release to warrant fans slightly ruining their pants. The Get Up Kids play the Opera House Tuesday (March 9).
