the Gossip Movement (Kill Rock Stars) Rating: NNNN Rating: NNNN
Often burdened with too many irrelevant qualifiers clinging to their sonic style (queer-, fat-, Riot Grrl . you name it), ex-Arkansan trio the Gossip rock harder and more soulfully than most bands out there. You hear that, White Stripes? On Movement, their second full-length, the Gossip raise the bar on boiling, blistering blues-rock bluster, sending Beth Ditto's she-lion howl soaring over dirty, snotty waves of four-string gee-tar. You can't help but wanna shake what yo' mama gave you. The record really takes off when they reach beyond their reliable gospel/garage punk formula, as in the splendid Gone, where the walls of the song collapse to leave Ditto's stunningly sexy growl echoing in a cavern of hand-clap percussion. Killer.
