The debut album by seven-piece Halifax pop collective the Got to Get Got offers 11 tracks of upbeat fun with plenty of great moments. Vocalist, guitarist and chief songwriter Mark Mullane writes memorable choruses that give a focus to the meandering, energetic songs, particularly Gettin’ Dirty In The Afterlife, Bethpage Black and Rattle Off. Hell Awaits, Maybe has a fine guitar solo, while horns make dynamic appearances.

But the former North of America singer also thickens the songs with relentless rhythm guitar and employs a blasé Stephen Malkmus delivery that dates the album, despite the contemporary “collective” feel and jokey lyrical allusions to Rihanna’s Umbrella (Bethpage Black) and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (Some Loud Thunder Clap Your Hands Say Boom).
Sahalee never quite catches fire but is still a promising, ambitious debut.
