THE GOURDS

THE GOURDS Cow Fish Fowl Or Pig (Sugar Hill) Rating: NNNN Rating: NNNN

If the brew-friendly fuds in the Gourds happened to be from, say, Peterborough, instead of Austin, the accordion-squeezing and fiddle-sawing hombres would be hailed as Canuck hoser heroes, with their bearded mugs plastered all over the back of our $5 bill. Well, at least the wedding band of choice for the Trailer Park Boys. The fabulous Cow Fish Fowl Or Pig disc, released a few months back, captures the sloppy, swinging brillance of the Gourds’ hayseed jive at it’s most refined. So while there are moments that fondly recall the Band, most of this hits like an Acadian ass-whuppin’ delivered by stoned slackers.

Folks will be dancing like ants on watermelon when the Gourds make their Toronto debut at the Horseshoe Sunday (March 30).
