The Greenhornes

Wow, what happened here? Cincinnati’s Greenhornes, last heard backing Loretta Lynn on the Jack White-produced Van Lear Rose album, are joined by Brendan Benson in the studio and suddenly the calendar flips back to 1965. At first I thought I’d put on Kinda Kinks by mistake, but the more I listened to East Grand Blues, the less the Greenhornes’ take on sweetly harmonized beat-pop seems clearly connected to the brothers Davies. Aside from the phony British accents, it seems like they’re going for more of a folky Squires or Summer Sounds vibe. It’s admittedly a strange choice for 2005, but it kinda works for a five-song EP. Strangely enchanting.
