The Headphones are essentially the band Pedro the Lion, with one significant difference: they use synths instead of guitars. Other than that, this is totally a typical PTL release, with frontman David Bazan singing his trademark sulky melodies over fairly minimal instrumentation. Bazan does have a great talent for narratives, and here they’re characteristically captivating and well structured. Between his often heart-wrenching lyrics and an array of occasionally very old- and cheap-sounding Casio keyboards, the album is interesting enough but kinda sounds like a couple of guys having some fun before their next real album.
