THE High Dials A New Devotion (Rainbow Quartz) Rating: NNNN Rating: NNNN
Montreal's High Dials are caught in a time warp. I don't know what their old devotion was, but it's clear that the new one has nothing to do with anything on the charts in this millennium. The High Dials sound comes right out of the British Invasion, but strangely enough, it works. It's a mod-rocking affair of catchy, melodic, hook-heavy, harmonious tunes loosely arranged as a concept album about some bloke named Silas. He's on a quest to escape the terror of a futuristic city - which clearly reflects the High Dials' own dilemma of being trapped in a world of Good Charlottes - but that doesn't detract from the impact of this highly infectious music.
The High Dials rock the Rivoli August 28.
