Local cowpokes the Jane Waynes have been soothing this city's lonely hearts with their gender-bending country weepers for awhile now, so it's high time they put out a record. While well-produced by guest member Dan Turcotte, Cowboy Songs doesn't match the hootenanny energy of the Janes' live shows. You do get a new appreciation for their writing - like pomo Hank Williams avatars, the ladies have mastered a perfect pastiche of old-timey country & western tropes, both lyrically and sonically - the arrangements are lovely, and you've gotta grin at sly lyrical twists like the "take me back to jail" fantasy Women's Prison. But I wish their voices were a bit stronger - either more world-weary or less earnestly strained. The Jane Waynes play Pride Stage North Saturday (June 26) at 9 pm.
