When I was young, my only defence against the annual influx of Happy Birthday Jesus ditties (aside from The Dreidel Song) was a Sharon, Lois & Bram record called Candles Long Ago. By the fifth year, that shit gets real tired. Later on, Adam Sandler gave me The Hanukkah Song, but it was no match for Silent Night, Carol Of The Bells, Jingle Bell Rock.... You get the drift. So I could kiss Adam Gardner and Dave Schneider (of Guster and the Zambonis respectively) for this hilarious and shockingly listenable set of latke-time tuneage. Though the Florida in-jokes and Catskills softshoe of At The Timeshare and lines like "We will march on / With General Tso / And Egg Foo Yung" (from the Cake-like Goyim Friends) make it clear these boys know from funny, I'm kvelling over the neat pop pastiches - a little Long Winters here, some Ramonesish rock there - that make me hum to tracks like Jewish Girls (At The Matzoh Ball) on the streetcar. A bit in-jokey? Yes. A limited-time seasonal treat? Certainly. But oy, so enjoyable. Such mensches they are.
