The story behind Montreal five-piece the Lovely Feathers is that they came this close to indie-style superstardom à la Metric and via Pitchfork thanks to their 2006 release, Hind Hind Legs. Then they went back to school for PhDs and to Nepal on soul-searching sojourns, and were forgotten. But if their comeback album, Fantasy Of The Lot, is any indication, their tale of impending mega-success was a lot of wishful thinking.

While the songs are enthusiastic, smartly arranged and have memorable guitar and synth lines, the overall sound – urgent indie rock with nods to Belle & Sebastian and the Montreal scene (Arcade Fire, Unicorns) – isn’t particularly fresh. Lead singer Mark Kupfert shoots off lyrics in a uniquely rapid-fire, repetitive way, but his affected singing style and faux accent are toe-curling.
