The Marble Index

I might have to check my sources on this one, but I’ve heard that Hamilton trio the Marble Index bought three tickets on the Morrissey train to Gloomytown, where they may or may not have written their latest disc. On the follow-up to 04’s self-titled debut, the fellas display a penchant for catchy and nicely structured pop melodies designed to aggressively tug and yank at heartstrings. Borrowing from the soaring, melancholic romance of the Smiths but incorporating the aggressive swagger of the Clash, the Marble Index focus on their strengths, like singer Brad Germain’s capable voice and impassioned delivery. But ultimately, after 12 songs, the songwriting seems predictable, giving the impression that the Index, though talented, need more time to hone their sound.

The Marble Index hit the Drake Saturday (August 5).
