The Monument Years

Rating: NNN

This collection of Arthur Alexander’s Sound Stage 7 and Monument label sessions circa 65-72 isn’t the R&B song stylist’s finest work (there’s a reason why over half of these 28 tracks weren’t previously released), but there are a few lost country-soul gems uncovered that are too tasty to miss. The Jerry Chesnut compositions Another Place, Another Time and Miles And Miles From Nowhere are jukebox classics, as is Alexander’s own guilt-soaked We’re Gonna Hate Ourselves In The Morning and his aching takes on Neil Diamond’s Glory Road and Tony Joe White’s The Migrant. A swell companion to Richard Younger’s well-researched biography, Get A Shot Of Rhythm And Blues.
