THE NEUTRON STARS Home’s Not Where The Heart Is (independent) Rating: NNN

Rating: NNN

A friend of mine described Guelph powerhouse group the Neutron Stars as “music by balding record collectors who like pop music and know better,” which ain’t that far off the mark. Home’s Not Where The Heart Is consists of ridiculously hooky melodies spanning a studied range of pop idioms, from alt-country to 60s-ish frugs to guitar-boy ballads. With guest spots by a bunch of Guelphite lights – from Lewis Melville to the adorable Barmitzvah Brothers – it’s smart without being eggheadish, and carefree without seeming lazy.

Toast the Neutron Stars’ release of Home’s Not Where The Heart Is at B-Side Saturday (September 20).
