THE PACK A.D. Funeral Mixtape (Mint) Rating: NNN
They added the Anno Domini to separate themselves from the Pack, a posse of hip-hop kids from northern California, and a German proto-punk band from the late 70s. Now, if the Vancouver duo could only do something to differentiate their music from that of a certain red-and-black-clad blues-based couple from Detroit.
Becky Black and Jack White aren't really comparable as guitar players; Black's riffs are sludgier Sab stuff with some occasional slide action, which complements Maya Miller's no-frills drum style. Black's vocal style, on the other hand, especially on the blues-pop Making Gestures, is too White-esque to dismiss. Black and Miller fair better on soft-burning Dannemora Blues, where Black dials down the Joplin histrionics and gets into a smoky groove.
The Pack A.D. play the Horseshoe September 11.
