The pine valley cosmonauts The Executioner’s Last Songs (Bloodshot) Rating: NNNN Rating: NNNN

As a benefit for the Illinois Death Penalty Moratorium Project, Jon Langford has enlisted his well-strung Pine Valley Cosmonauts and an all-star cast of the usual suspects to perform their favourite tunes concerning “murder, mob law and cruel, cruel punishment.” Bloodshot-affiliated artists Sally Timms, Neko Case and Devil in the Woodpile’s Rick Sherry do the label proud, yet as with previous Bloodshot comps, they’re aced by the contributions of outsiders. This time the glory-grabbers are Steve Earle, Janet Bean, Johnny Dowd, Edith Frost, Paul Burch, Rosie Flores, Jenny Toomey and, most surprising of all, Frankie and Johnny Navin of the Aluminum Group, who get down on Shel Silverstein’s 25 Minutes To Go.
