Will “Quantic” Holland follows up the impressive Mishaps Happening debut of his live Quantic Soul Orchestra project with a dance-floor-filling salute to the tough-bumpin’ sound of the Meters and James Brown’s JBs, where go-to vocalist Alice Russell serves as Holland’s Vicki Anderson in stylishly soulful fashion. Each deftly arranged track sounds like a vintage deep funk classic, but the hard-hitting drums and horns keep this from coming off like a quaint nostalgia trip. Pushin’ On will have old-school soul and R&B fans saying, “I didn’t think anyone made records like this any more.” Believe it.
