Growing up in rural Wake County, North Carolina, poor Ivan Howard didn't have a synth-pop duo like the Pet Shop Boys to worship, so he had to create his own with partner Kelly Crisp. And if you thought the Rosebuds' first two albums weren't obsessed enough with the 80s, Night Of The Furies promises to have even Reality Bites-haters doing jerky dance moves up and down 7-Eleven aisles. That's not to say you'll find anything Knack-ish here. It's all about throwback synth melodies, programmed beats and melodramatic bellowing about non-specific relationship trauma, sorta like Human League, Spandau Ballet or maybe the Associates. With the studio assistance of Justin Vernon along with Mark and Brian Paulson, the Rosebuds have finally realized their time warp dream... which could be our worst nightmare.
