The Secret Machines are such an amalgam of influences, they sound like everything and nothing at once. That’s not always a bad thing, but they take it a step too far by making four of the six tracks here covers, all of which – except for Immer Wieder, which sounds like Philip Glass meeting Pink Floyd in German – they turn into fuzzy ambient draggers. Their approach kinda works for Money (That’s What I Want) but falls flat on Astral Weeks and Girl From The North Country. Why can’t folks leave well enough alone? Listening to this mix of indie rock, neo-psychedelia, swirly dream pop and 80s rock, you spend some time wondering who these guys sound like, then forget the question when the song becomes so repetitive you want to bang your head against the wall.
Secret Machines open for Kings of Leon at the Kool Haus August 3.
