The Sisters Of Sheynville

Rating: NNNN

There’s a lot more to klezmer music that what you heard during a Hora at your friend’s Bar Mitzvah.

[rssbreak]

Masterful musicianship, tricky solos and fancy vocal work are all the signs of a good klezmer disc, and The Sisters of Sheynville deliver on all accounts.

]Much like The Barry Sisters, a legendary 40s Yiddish singing duo, this all-female Toronto-based trio creates old-timey Jewish music filled with jazzy instrumentation, dance-worthy swing beats, and even a few English language tunes.

While their originals are top notch, their light, bouncy cover of the traditional tune Chiribim is a must listen.

The Sisters of Sheynville play the Harbourfront Centre as part of the Ashkenaz Festival on August 31.
