The STRATFORD 4

The STRATFORD 4 Love & Distortion (Jetset) Rating: NNN

Rating: NNN

Slightly twee, the Stratford 4’s spaced-out, sardonic, Britpop-bent sound is exactly right for fall 2003. The vocals have an off-hand Stephen Malkmus feel, and the lyrics are actually clever, while the band has no problem handling the rigours of getting with the psych program. The best track is Telephone, an eight-minute examination of a conversation concerning music between singer/guitarist Chris Streng and his mom, with the punchline “There’s more to life than the Stratford 4.”

Check the Stratford 4 when they open for Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at the Guvernment tonight (Thursday, September 25).
