THE SUPERS

Rating: NN

You wouldn’t know it from the Supers’ website, which lists their next show as December 2004, but this early 00s buzz band is back. Four years ago the foursome released Mystery On Pop Mountain, a well-received album of pop and pedal steel, so it’s a bit surprising that the band would resort to by-the-books power pop for their long-overdue follow-up. Re:Arrange doesn’t start well. All About You could be a Trews B-side, and the rest of the album rarely gets more exciting than that. While the Supers are technically sound and have a few interesting lyrical moments, it’s all pretty mundane. Their banality is even more surprising given that lead singer Maury LaFoy worked with k-os and Sarah Harmer during the band’s hiatus.

The Supers play the Rivoli Friday (September 1).
