If you thought Craig Nicholls was down and out of the game after displaying some rather unstellar behaviour (like kicking a photographer) a couple of years ago, think again. The Vines are back for another shot. Turns out Nicholls isn't necessarily an asshole after all, but suffers from the neurobiological disorder Aspergers syndrome. Once they were the next great white hype, but now it's hard to tell if they haven't missed the retro rock boat. A lot of the recognizable post-grunge stuff is here, right from the opener, Anysound, moving through psych and prog experimentation, eventually leading to the ambient Floydian final track, Spaceship. This is where things get a little more interesting, since the old garage revival stuff falls flat. Some nice instrumentation, with mandolin and other strings makes for an odd juxtaposition with the stunningly inane lyrics.
