Just when you thought the nu-new wave revolution was over, along come New York City’s the Virgins. The four-piece are about three years too late to make any sort of real impact on the music scene at large, but if you’re still into jangly UK-influenced pop, then the band’s debut is worth checking out.
It’s unoriginal, to be sure (think a less rocking version of Franz Ferdinand), but some of the tracks, like the disco-influenced Rich Girls, are catchy enough to bring at least a few minutes of pleasure. While it’s not a bad debut, it’s nothing special either. The question now is whether these guys will break their own path on their follow-up or keep regurgitating what’s been done before.
The Virgins play the Phoenix on Wednesday (June 4).
