THE WASH

THE WASH (Aftermath/Interscope) Rating: NNN

You’d think Dr. Dre could put together a new album with a handful of his friends without having to also star with Snoop Dogg in an unfunny comedy about two thugs who own a car wash. The Wash is more than your average scattershot hiphop soundtrack, though. Beyond a D12 cut about date rape and a few throwaway cuts, Dre produced most of the tracks, teaming up with Snoop on two for some classic creeping Casio beats and completely reinventing his sound on a thrilling collaboration with Busta Rhymes. The Doctor is outdone, however, by Timbaland, who laces a beat for his protégé Bubba Sparxxx that’s more Lee Perry-influenced dub than hiphop, complete with a lurching flamenco riff, eerie backup vocals and mooing cows.
