While the Weakerthans haven't broken up (yet), Reunion Tour is an apt name for the Winnipeg foursome's fourth full-length. Besides the occasional gig here and there, they've been missing in action since they wrapped up their tour for their 2003 release, Reconstruction Site, prompting rumours of the group's demise. So a new Weakerthans album feels a bit like a reunion.
Reunion Tour is like previous Weakerthans albums. It's got the same mix of mid-tempo power chords and slow-moving ballads, and the lyrics are just as thought-provoking and insightful as ever. Relative Surplus Value, a song about the tech boom, is especially well written. While some might be turned off by the Weakerthans' sameness, others know they can count on infectious choruses and John K. Samson's sweet, delicate voice to carry the disc the entire way through.
The Weakerthans play the Phoenix November 8.
