The Welcome Wagon

Rating: NNN

No one has ever accused Sufjan Stevens of being conventional in his music, so it’s no surprise that the Asthmatic Kitty founder would sign a lord-loving reverend to his label.

The debut disc by Brooklyn Pastor Vito Aiuto and his wife Monique – also known as The Welcome Wagon – is rooted in gospel, soft folk and easy-listening indie pop, which not only makes this a warm listen, but an album perfectly suited to Steven’s delicate producing style.

For some the only drawback might be all the songs about the lord, but this disc, which was recorded in living rooms and churches, is such a pretty listen that it’s easy to become a slave to the music, rather than the message.
