Based on the audio evidence - mopey downtempo tunes filled with snarling recriminations concerning broken promises and sorrowful confessions about being confused and abused by love, punctuated by spare piano plinking and funereal drum thumps - it would appear that Get Behind Me Satan (out Tuesday) is a breakup album. No doubt Jack White's split with Renée Zellweger was rough on the red-pants rocker, but giving up rock 'n' roll to moan the blues for four sides of a double album seems a tad excessive. It wouldn't be such a dreadful listening experience if the songwriting weren't so relentlessly abysmal. Evidently, White wants to make his fans suffer right along with him. A sad, self-pitying misstep that he could regret for decades to come.
