The Zolas

Rating: NNN

West Coast piano-pop duo the Zolas excel at energetic cabaret rock. On their debut full-length, Zachary Gray and Tom Dobrzanski employ keys, drums and vocals to create a dynamic, versatile sound that’s well produced by Howard Redekopp (Tegan and Sara, You Say Party! We Say Die!).

On rockish opener You’re Too Cool, breathless vocals and a quiet chorus evoke Coldplay and Spoon. Later, on Body Ash, the duo reveals a penchant for theatricality that’s slightly cheesy but should go over well with the Canadian Idol set.

Standout track No Talking channels the Clash and the New Pornographers and has a strong shout-along chorus that finishes with a delectable guitar hook.

Top track: No Talking

The Zolas play Lee’s Palace tonight (Thursday, November 12).
