There's no such thing as conventional when it comes to They Might Be Giants. They've written kids' albums , the theme song for Malcolm In The Middle and reams of quirky lyrics, and are pictured wearing penguin masks in the liner notes for their new album.
So you might be shocked by the fact that The Else's first few songs are about as straightforward as it gets - five tracks of standard (albeit shamelessly infectious) indie rock that come off like a fuzzier Superfriendz. But fear not, fans: about halfway through, TMBG revert back to their old ways, throwing in odd instrumentation, and odd breakdowns and lyrics ("Bustin' my pirate hump, rockin' my peg-leg stump, my mind naturally turns to taxidermy").
While this album might not be their most mind-bending, its hooks and idiosyncrasies prove that after more than two decades, TMBG still know how to have fun.
TMBG hit the Mod Club Monday (July 23).
