I could never put my finger on it, but something never sat just right between me and post-emo, alpha-sensitive Thursday. It's not the music. Their weirdly effective Smiths/Morrissey and post-hardcore mash-up is cool in that poetic aggro sort of way. No, while the rest of the band have proven they can write solid music, it's singer Geoff Rickly who presents the biggest problem, and that's mostly because the man simply cannot tone down his over-emoting. Dude, you don't always have to sound like you're about to cry. That aside, the band has moved forward musically into well-thought-out song structures and experimentation, so if you can stomach Rickly's excesses, City is some fine heavy post-rock.
