Ex-Jayhawks timekeeper Tim O'Reagan is stepping out from behind the kit to pick up where the No Depression darlings left off. While former Hawks Gary Louris and Marc Perlman lend respective hands, he asserts his distinctiveness with a more deceptively upbeat pop take. It's clear O'Reagan, who hails from Minnesota, grew up tuning in the Fab Four on his AM dial. Songs like Black & Blue or River Bends are country-tinged rockers that circle around huge, harmony-filled choruses. But underneath lies that Midwest lyrical melancholia perfected by guys like Dave Pirner and Paul Westerberg, the latter of whom O'Reagan collaborated with during his early 90s Leatherwoods days. Another suitably depressing addition to the Lost Highway catalogue.
O'Reagan hits the Horseshoe August 15.
