Released previously in a seriously limited edition -- 160 copies -- with a booklet of artwork and poetry inspired by the tunes, guitarist Tim Posgate's risky An Eager Leap set is now available for general consumption, minus the fancy packaging but with the challenging original idea still in place.
It's actually four albums in one, a demonstration of four very different facets of Posgate's style. The six pieces by his Jazzstory quartet are actually a showcase for the strong playing of trumpeter Lina Allemano. A lyrical duet with bassist Rob Clutton is all about two musicians playing as close as possible to each other without stepping on each other. The self-explanatory Horn Band adds brass and woodwinds to Posgate's lyrical compositions. And a set of solo tunes distills the guitarist's technique to the essentials. The playing is concise and inspired throughout, and rather than being distracting, the changing moods bring an odd cohesion to the different sessions. Jazzstory host Top o' the Senator beginning Tuesday (March 6).
