Tinkertoy

Rating: NNN

Tinkertoy are Paul Shrimpton and Andrew Wedman, two local guys who make gentle, soothing soft techno. This full-length album is satisfying and interesting the whole way through but lacks enough real standout moments to raise it above mere background music. It’s not quite sleepy enough to be ambient, but the vibe is too restrained to work on the dance floor. The use of live instruments and guest musicians (Sandro Perri, aka Polmo Polpo, drops some excellent slide guitar) works well and gives the album more personality and emotion – aspects they’ll hopefully continue to explore. Tinkertoy play a CD release party at No Regrets (219 Dufferin) Saturday (October 2).
