It’s incredibly impressive how far Tokyo Police Club took their A Lesson In Crime EP, a 16-minute blast that fuelled endless tours, Letterman spots and mainstream radio love. And probably one of the most tantalizing aspects of that jolting mini-record was the teasing possibility of what else the band was capable of. After a nearly two-year wait, disappointingly the answer is not much more.
TPC keep their songs taut and mostly under three minutes, so Elephant Shell whips by in a charging whirl of indie rock urgency but skips on substance. Considering how long it took to get this debut made, it’s confounding how rushed it all feels. David Monk’s lyrics come off like they were written on the drive to the studio. TPC probably have a statement record in them, but this isn’t it.
Tokyo Police Club play the Opera House May 2 and 3.
